Completion Expected Summer 2026
The Oak Hill Parkway project in Southwest Austin has officially reached the halfway mark, with major construction milestones already achieved and more underway. Led by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), this transformational project aims to enhance safety, reduce congestion, and improve overall mobility along the US 290 corridor by converting it into a freeway with frontage roads.
Key Construction Updates:
- Halfway Complete: The project has reached the midpoint in its construction timeline, signaling steady progress toward completion in summer 2026.
- Bridge Construction: Several bridge structures are complete or underway, including the new bridge at RM 1826 and US 290.
- Traffic Shifts: In various areas, traffic has been shifted to new frontage roads to facilitate construction of the main lanes.
- Frontage Roads: Construction of frontage roads continues to improve traffic flow and maintain access during the project.
- Main lanes & Beams: Crews are actively placing beams and constructing the main lane bridges, which will serve as the core of the new freeway.
- Retaining & Sound Walls: Retaining walls are being built to support the new lanes and preserve the surrounding environment, while sound walls are being installed to reduce noise impact.
- Shared-Use Paths: New sidewalks and shared-use paths are being integrated to support bicycles and pedestrians.
- Community Impact: Residents and businesses can expect lane shifts, delays, and increased noise, dust, and lighting during the ongoing work.
- Upcoming Changes: Two major transitions are coming soon:
- Closure of the Convict Hill Road intersection
- Eastbound SH 71 traffic will shift to the new frontage road
Project Goals:
- Alleviate traffic congestion and enhance driver safety on US 290
- Improve mobility and travel times through the Oak Hill area
- Provide safe access for pedestrians and cyclists
- Reduce environmental impact with stormwater management and tree preservation
Stay tuned for more updates as we move closer to the finish line on one of Austin’s most significant infrastructure projects.
